How cover-ups work
New art overold ink.
A cover-up is a new custom tattoo designed to hide an existing one. Tattoo ink can't be erased by tattooing over it, so a skilled cover-up artist uses darker tones, heavier shading, texture and clever composition to absorb the old lines into the new design. Done well, nobody sees what was there before.
That is why cover-ups take more planning than a fresh tattoo. The size, darkness and shape of the old piece decide what can go on top. At Grade A, every cover-up — and every tattoo rework, where an old piece is refreshed rather than hidden — starts with a free consultation so your artist can see the tattoo in person and be honest about the options.
Good candidates for a cover-up
- Faded, blurred or outdated tattoos
- Names you no longer want to carry
- Small pieces that can be absorbed into a larger design
- Old work you want to rework with fresh color and shading
- Tattoos you have already lightened with laser sessions
Laser and cover-ups
Cover nowor fade first?
Some tattoos can be covered straight away. Others benefit from a few laser sessions first. Your artist will tell you which applies during your consultation.
Cover it directly
Lighter, thinner or faded tattoos can often be covered in the next design without any prep. Bolder styles with dark shading, like blackwork, realism or neo-traditional, give the artist the most room to hide old ink.
Fade with laser, then cover
If the old tattoo is very dark or you want a lighter, more open design, laser fading helps. Fading for a cover-up typically takes 3–5 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart, and a lighter canvas means more creative freedom. Laser is offered at our Clinton Street flagship.

Free consultation
Bring the tattoo you want gone and any ideas you like. Your artist checks its size, darkness, linework and placement, and talks through what can realistically go over it. Consultations are free at all locations and are especially helpful for cover-ups.
Decide: cover now or fade first
If the old ink is light enough, your artist can design straight over it. If it is very dark or you want a delicate result, they may suggest a few laser fading sessions at our Clinton Street studio first.
Custom design built around the old tattoo
Your artist draws a one-of-a-kind piece that uses darker shading, texture and composition to absorb the old lines. Revisions are encouraged until the design feels right.
Stencil and placement check
Before tattooing, the stencil is placed over the old piece so you can see exactly how the new design sits and how much of the old tattoo it hides.
Tattooing and aftercare
Your artist works in a fully sterile setup with single-use needles and supplies. You leave with aftercare instructions, and larger cover-ups may be completed over more than one session.

Your consultation
Comeprepared.
Show up with the tattoo uncovered and easy to reach, plus reference images of designs or styles you like. Be open about how much you want hidden and how much the new piece can grow — that's the biggest factor in a successful cover-up.
Your artist can sketch concepts, discuss placement and estimate pricing. If you're not sure who to see, browse portfolios on our artists page or gallery, or call and our front desk will match you with an artist whose style fits.

Cover-upFAQ.
Can any tattoo be covered up?
Many tattoos can be covered, but not every old tattoo can be hidden under every new idea. Very dark, dense or large pieces limit what can go over them. Your artist will look at the existing tattoo during a free consultation and tell you honestly what is possible, and whether a few laser sessions first would open up more options.
Does a cover-up have to be bigger than the old tattoo?
Usually, yes. The new design needs enough size, contrast and darker areas to absorb the old linework, so most cover-ups end up larger than the tattoo underneath. Your artist will show you placement and size with a stencil before anything is tattooed.
Should I get laser tattoo removal before a cover-up?
If the old tattoo is very dark or you want a lighter, more open design, fading it first helps. Fading for a cover-up typically takes 3–5 laser sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart, at our Clinton Street studio in Fort Wayne. A lighter canvas gives your artist more creative freedom.
How much does a cover-up tattoo cost in Fort Wayne?
Cover-ups are priced like any custom tattoo — by size, detail and time. Your artist goes over pricing with you at your free consultation, once they have seen the old tattoo.
Can I walk in for a cover-up?
Walk-ins are welcome at all three studios, subject to artist availability, but cover-ups are best started with a consultation. Your artist needs time to see the old tattoo in person and design something that actually hides it.
Which Grade A studios do cover-ups?
All three — Clinton Street and Glenbrook Square in Fort Wayne, and Castleton Square in Indianapolis — offer cover-ups and free consultations. Laser tattoo removal is available at our Clinton Street flagship only.
How do I care for a cover-up after the session?
Exactly like any new tattoo: leave the bandage on for 2–4 hours or as directed, wash gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer, and do not pick at peeling skin. Our tattoo aftercare guide covers every stage.
